ER Mapper Chooses Blue Marble’s GeoCalc Coordinate System and Conversion Library for use in Geospatial Software Products

Gardiner, Maine — December 5, 2006 – Blue Marble Geographics (www.bluemarblegeo.com) is pleased to announce that ER Mapper recently licensed the GeoCalc 6.3 C++ software developer toolkit to enhance and greatly expand their coordinate system definition and conversion support. Blue Marble’s coordinate conversion technology is used worldwide by thousands of GIS analysts at software companies, universities, oil and gas companies, civil engineering, surveying, technology, enterprise GIS groups, government and military organizations.

GeoCalc 6.3 is the largest commercially available coordinate system library, supporting geodetic parameter definition matches for all major GIS software and industry standard organizations. The tool is a fully object-oriented, cross platform software developer kit designed for complex coordinate system definition and conversion in an easy-to-use interface. Now entering its fifteenth year in existence, the tool utilizes an XML data source and provides the latest support for well-known text (WKT) coordinate system definitions per the Open GIS Consortium specifications. The human readable capabilities of the XML data source in GeoCalc are important for ease of use in geodetic development projects. XML allows the GIS expert in your company to work with a developer who may know very little about coordinate systems. The GIS expert can easily read the coding to make certain that all the necessary parameters and tasks are included in the software developed with GeoCalc.

As the most comprehensive commercially available coordinate system library, GeoCalc supports over 3,200 predefined coordinate systems, over 1,100 datum shifts, fifty plus mathematical projections, local and global vertical datum definitions, in addition to current EPSG coordinate system datasource support. GeoCalc has fully functioning dialogs that allow the user to define custom systems, ellipsoids, datums, datum shifts, and units without having to edit a text file. GeoCalc also supports coordinate system definition straight from TAB or PRJ files.

“Blue Marble’s GeoCalc will benefit our customers greatly”, stated Mike Dunne, Senior Software Engineer for ER Mapper. “This tool and their support staff will save us many headaches when it comes to coordinate system work. Outsourcing this to Blue Marble frees our developers up to focus on our true area of software expertise.”

“When you’re looking for the top notch geospatial imagery software, you think of ER Mapper,” stated Blue Marble President Patrick Cunningham. “GeoCalc will expand the capabilities and comprehensiveness of their tools even further. We are excited to welcome them as a developer customer.”
