Blue Marble Releases Update to the Global Mapper Academic Curriculum

Freely available to any institute of higher education, the Global Mapper Curriculum now contains three new workflows and numerous updates to reflect recent developments in the software.

Hallowell, Maine – August 11, 2021 – Blue Marble Geographics (bluemarblegeo.com) is pleased to announce that the Global Mapper Academic Curriculum has been revised and updated in preparation for the upcoming academic year. This extensive package of educational materials provides a concise and easy-to-follow resource for teachers tasked with introducing students to the broad field of GIS, and are freely available by request for any institute of higher education.

Over recent years, an increasing number of universities and colleges have chosen Global Mapper as their primary GIS teaching resource, especially when introducing the basic principles of geospatial technology to students for whom GIS is not their main field of study. Combining a powerful and diverse collection of geospatial analysis tools with a straightforward and intuitive design, Global Mapper is ideally suited for the classroom.

To help with the teaching process, Blue Marble application specialists have developed the Global Mapper Academic Curriculum, a series of 12 hands-on tutorial labs with accompanying data files that offer step-by-step instructions covering many of the key functions of the software. Thoroughly revised and updated to reflect recent innovations in the software, the topics covered in the curriculum include watershed modeling, lidar reclassification, contour generation, and raster calculation. Each lab concludes with an open exercise in which students are required to employ the skills and knowledge learned in the lab in a problem-solving scenario.

Three new labs have been added to the curriculum for 2021: a suitability analysis lab for solar farm planning, which involves a variety of terrain and vector analysis procedures; a 3D change detection lab using several point cloud datasets; and a terrain modification lab, which incorporates DTM creation, hydro-flattening, and terrain painting.

“Keeping up-to-date with the latest technical innovations can be challenging, not only for students but also for teachers.” stated David McKittrick, Outreach and Training Manager at Blue Marble Geographics. “We are delighted that we can flatten the learning curve for teachers who are interested in using Global Mapper in the classroom by providing these complementary teaching materials.”
