From Survey Planning to Field Execution, in One Platform

Snapshot

Client:

Bintang Subsea Indonesia

Challenge:

Planning a safe, efficient survey route for an autonomous surface vessel operating in the Red Sea, using bathymetric data from multiple sources and formats

Outcome:

Validated survey route, high-resolution seafloor mapping, and a unified workflow from mission planning through final analysis

Project overview

Marine surveying depends on accurate planning long before a vessel reaches the water. Survey teams must combine bathymetric data, nautical charts, engineering drawings, and coordinate systems from multiple sources into a single, reliable survey plan. Success depends on validating survey routes before deployment and maintaining confidence in the data throughout collection and analysis.

This success story explores how Bintang Subsea Indonesia used Global Mapper to create a connected office-to-field surveying workflow for the Al Falah Survey in the Red Sea. By integrating disparate datasets, validating coordinate systems, and preparing an autonomous survey route before deployment, the team improved survey efficiency, data quality, and confidence from mission planning through final analysis.

The challenge

Planning offshore surveys requires combining nautical charts, bathymetric data, engineering drawings, and real-time survey information that often exist in different formats and coordinate systems. The team needed a single workspace to reconcile those datasets, build a validated route, and program it into the vessel’s navigation system with confidence. Once a survey vessel is underway, route planning errors become costly to correct and can jeopardize both efficiency and data quality.

The department needed a scalable way to distribute authoritative maps, keep them current, and provide reliable access for both visitors and field staff.

The approach

David Wibowo’s team used Global Mapper to consolidate all survey data into one workspace, validate coordinate systems across sources, and plan a route that balanced coverage, efficiency, and safety. The finalized route moved directly from Global Mapper into the vessel’s AIS navigation system, allowing the office-prepared survey plan to be executed without manual rework or translation between systems.

The same workspace was then used to process, analyze, and verify survey data once collection was complete.

Global Mapper handled the full workflow, from pre-survey planning through post-collection analysis.

Results

The Global Mapper-enabled route planning, combined with the incorporation of multibeam data, yielded a comprehensive survey strategy that maximized efficiency, accuracy, and safety.
