The challenge
For years, Huber relied on expensive single-use GPS units and cumbersome manual data transfers to support field operations across remote timberland. Foresters worked in difficult conditions year-round, sometimes at night, in deep snow, where flagging tape marking property boundaries was easy to miss. The cost and friction were adding up, and mistakes in the field could create operational, environmental, and certification compliance risks. Huber needed a more efficient way to equip field crews with authoritative maps while simplifying field data collection and certification reporting.
The approach
IT and GIS Manager Lance Case and his team prepared large-scale operational maps for road planning, terrain assessment, and boundary management. Their goal was to reliably distribute office-prepared maps to mobile devices and return structured, GPS-tagged field observations without manual reconciliation. Avenza Maps extended authoritative GIS data into the field while preserving the spatial data required for inventory management, operational planning, and SFI and FSC certification.
