Raster layers are most often defined as an array of regular pixels in which the inherent combination of red, green, and blue determines each pixel's color. When viewed in conjunction with other pixels, they collectively create a visual representation of features on the screen and in this form, are frequently used as base maps. The dimensions of each pixel, relative to the corresponding distance in ground units, determines the resolution and often the quality of the image. While data in raster format is not as interactive as vector data, Global Mapper provides a number of tools for utilizing or analyzing raster layers.
