In 2022, North America will see a fundamental change to the way we manage geospatial data. Out goes the NAD83 datum and its vertical cousin, NAVD88, and in comes The North American Terrestrial Reference Frame of 2022 (NATRF2022). For those of us who recall the transition from NAD27 to NAD83, this update from the US National Geodetic Survey, the Canadian Geodetic Survey, and the Mexican Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía, promises to be a similarly monumental process and one that will likely take many companies and organizations years to fully implement. If not managed effectively and efficiently this update has the potential to be inconvenient at best and chaotic at worst.
It is critically important that geospatial data managers are prepared for this change, are familiar with the specifications of the new reference framework, and understand how the new system will impact their data management practices. The time to begin this preparation process is now.
The following information resources provide an introduction to NATRF2022:
Geographic Calculator users will have a distinct advantage during this transitional process. Blue Marble's renowned expertise in geodetic data processing will ensure that all location-based data will be efficiently and accurately reassigned to the new coordinate systems.
