Projection Definitions

Global Mapper provides a number of projection methods and built in named projections available in the Configuration> Projection tab, and in the layer projection tab.

The projection list includes both projection methods that are configurable, and specific named projection definitions. When switching between specific named projections and configurable projections, any matching parameters will be maintained in the configurable projection.

'Reprojection on the fly' and Transformations

Global Mapper uses a set of predefined transformations to reproject data natively stored in other projections into the current display projection defined in the Configuration> Projection menu. All transformations are via WGS84. For more advanced transformation methods, see GeoCalc Mode: Projections and Datums

Loading Projections

Custom projections may be loaded from a prj file, txt file in WKT format, or esri xml file. When loading a file with no projection, recognized projection and control point files in the same location with the same file name will automatically be used. Load projections from GeoCalcOnline by logging in and saving the WKT to a TXT file, then load in Global Mapper, using the Load from File button in the projection section.

When loading a projection, Global Mapper will attempt to match the projection to a known projection and datum definition. This is done because different projection libraries report projection parameters with varying precision. WKT PRJ files always specify the base projection system (like Transverse Mercator, Albers Conic, etc.) with parameters rather than directly using a named grid system in the standardized part (the PROJCS name can be anything). Global Mapper loads the specified base projection system, then looks through the list of pre-defined systems, both zoned like UTM and State Plane, and individual grid systems like British Grid, for a match within an allowed difference in parameters (i.e. within 10 cm for linear parameters like false easting/ northing or within 1 / 10,000,000 difference for angular values). If all attribute values match and the datum is allowed, then the alias projection is automatically selected.

When a custom definition is loaded from a file in WKT format, Global Mapper will look for a datum match for the TOWGS84 parameters describing the transformation. For a datum match, the datums must be on the same ellipsoid (or the ellipsoids are identical within 10cm on both axes) and have a combined delta X in the transform parameters of < 1m. If multiple datums meet the criteria, the one with the closest match is used.

PRJ format

There is an Advanced Option on the General tab of the Configuration dialog allowing the older ESRI PRJ format to be exported instead. If for some reason a WKT-representation of the projection cannot be generated, the old ESRI PRJ format will be written out instead.

Custom Projection Names

When a projection definition is loaded from a file that contains a custom name, differing from the built in projection name, that information is stored in the Global Mapper User Data folder in the epsg_codes.txt file. The custom name will not display in the interface, but will be used for all exported projection files. For more information see

Not all software supports the older PRJ format to recognize these extra parameters.
