Loading Velocity Files

Velocity files are a text-based format used to store massive numbers of rows of seismic data.  These files can be so large that it is impractical to handle the quantity of data through the regular Point Database job type.  Velocity files are handled through a streamlined direct converter in the Vector Data Conversions job.  This allows the Calculator to process this type of data much more quickly than a conventional point database.

While Velocity files can actually be handled through the Point Database job type like any other text-based file type, working through the Vector Data Conversions job direct convert allows for much higher throughput performance.

Working with Velocity files in the Vector Data Conversions job is exactly the same as loading a conventional vector file format.  For steps to convert coordinates within a Velocity file, please see Vector Data Conversions.

Note: Velocity files are expected to contain data in XYZ order. If the Y value is the first coordinate, set Vector Processing Preferences for velocity files first.
