Installing and Configuring the Network License

Part I – Install the Network Server Software

1. Install the application on your application server using the executable file you downloaded from the Blue Marble Geographics website. (Note: All Blue Marble applications will install to a default application folder (Figure 1), or to the specific folder you designate as the installation directory. The application folder will have the same name as the software—Geographic Calculator, Geographic Transformer, etc.)

Figure 1. The application installation folder contains application files for use on the client workstations in the network.

2. Share the application folder (Figure 2) with local Full Control (Read, Write, and Execute) permissions (Figure 3). Have your network administrator give all potential network client users Full Control (Read, Write, and Execute) permissions (Figure 4). This is required for the process to work.

Figure 2. Share the application installation folder.

Figure 3. Grant authorized application users FULL CONTROL permissions to the shared folder on the Security tab.

Figure 4. Grant authorized application users FULL CONTROL permissions to the shared folder. Access this screen through the Permissions button on the Sharing tab.

3. Create a folder in which the temporary license files (.LIC) will reside. This can be the same folder in which the application was installed (see step 2), a different folder on the same server, or a folder on a different computer. Regardless of where you choose to store the license files, this folder must be shared with Full Control (Read, Write, Execute, and Delete) permissions for all client users. Note: the share name of the license folder does not necessarily have to have the same name as the folder itself.

Record this shared folder name as SHARE NAME, and the server on which the license file shared folder resides as the LICENSE SERVER NAME for use in step four.

4. Submit the LICENSE SERVER NAME and the license folder SHARE NAME to Blue Marble (authorize@bluemarblegeo.com) in the following format:

\\ LICENSE SERVER NAME \SHARE NAME \

For example, imagine that your network administrator has decided to have all temporary licenses written to a server named "SWORDFISH" in a folder named "Blue Marble License" (Figure 5):

C:\LICENSES\Blue Marble License\

Figure 5. On the server PC named "Swordfish," the application installation folder C:\LICENSES\Blue Marble License\ contains application files for use on the client workstations in the network.

In this example, let's say that the Blue Marble License folder has the network SHARE NAME BMGLIC (Figure 6).

Figure 6. Note that the Blue Marble Shared License folder C:\LICENSES\Blue Marble License\ has the SHARE NAME of BMGLIC.

In this case, you would submit the following to Blue Marble Geographics:

\\SWORDFISH\BMGLIC\

which corresponds to \\ LICENSE SERVER NAME \ SHARE NAME \ , only substituting in your values for LICENSE SERVER NAME and SHARE NAME from your server PC, which you recorded in step 3.

Part II – Configure the Network Server Software

Once Blue Marble Geographics send you a license file, you now have the key to activate the client/server application function.

The license file must reside with the rest of the application software files on the server PC, and its purpose is to:

  1. License the server with the appropriate number of concurrent seat licenses.
  2. Identify the shared folder in which license files (.LIC) will be stored.

1. Copy the network license file you received via e-mail from Blue Marble Geographics into the application install directory (Figure 7) and start the application by selecting it on the Start menu.

Figure 7. Note that the application license file must reside in the same folder as the Blue Marble Geographics application software, and not in the licensing shared folder.

2. Use the File->License Manager menu option to confirm the number of licenses and the location of the license (Figure 8). If you cannot verify the number of licenses at this point, or if you receive an 'Unlicensed Blue Marble Application' dialog, contact us immediately to verify your installation settings.

Figure 8. Note that Status = NETWORK and Max Users should equal the number of concurrent seat licenses you have purchased for your Blue Marble Geographics application software.

3. Obtain the client installation executable file from the Blue Marble website. Please follow this link to our online download area (Figure 9) and choose the product you are licensing:
http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/content/download.php

In the list of available downloads, you will see the Network License Client Executable File (Figure 10). Please log in and download it as instructed.

Figure 10. Find the Network License Client Executable File (typically the file name ends with client.exe.)

4. Copy the Network License Client Executable File to the application install directory (Figure 11). You are done with the server PC for now.

Figure 11. Note that the client application executable file must reside in the same folder as the Blue Marble Geographics application software.

Part III – Install and Configure the Client Software

On each client machine, follow steps 1 and 2.

1. Navigate to the application install directory (Figure 12) on the server (the machine upon which the network installation was performed) using the path from Part I – Step 2.

Figure 12. Navigate from the client to the shared application installation folder on the server to locate and execute the …client.exe file.

2. Run the client installation executable file that you just obtained from the Blue Marble website. Running this will install the client application software, register the application on the server, and add the icons to the Start menu on the client machine. The application will run on each client machine concurrently until the seat limit has been reached.

Please note: The Client installer executable must run from the same directory on the server as the main application executable, either geocalc.exe for Geographic Calculator or geotrans.exe for Geographic Transformer. If it is run from the wrong place, you will get error 1721.

Also note: The application will not run on additional client workstations once the number of users exceeds the maximum number of licenses indicated in the License Manager. For example, if your license has five users, then the server will grant access to the first five to access the application. Any additional users will need to wait until at least one of the five users exits the application.

If you experience any difficulty in getting your network license up and running, please contact our Support Team at geohelp@bluemarblegeo.com.
